Microsoft Word is a commercial word processor that is widely used by Microsoft. Microsoft Word is a productivity component of Microsoft Office software, but can also be purchased as a stand-alone product. Initially it was launched in 1983 and has since been revised many times. Microsoft Word is available for Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Microsoft Word is often called only Word or MS Word. Techopedia describes Microsoft Word. In 1981, Microsoft hired Charles Simonyi to develop word processing applications. The first version was released in 1983. Initially unpopular, because of the very different appearance compared to WordPerfect, the leading word processor at that time. However, Microsoft continues to improve Word for years, including the 1985 version that can run on Mac. The second major word release from Word, in 1987, included an increase in key features in addition to new functions such as support for rich text formats (RTF). In 1995, with the release of Windows 95 and Office 95, which offered a collection of productivity software office, sales of Microsoft Word increased significantly. Microsoft Word offers several features to facilitate the creation and editing of documents, including:

WYSIWYG display (what you see-what-you-get): This ensures that everything displayed on the screen appears in the same way when printed or moved to another format or program.
Check spelling: Word has a built-in dictionary for spell checking; misspelled words are marked with squiggly red underscore. Sometimes, Word automatically corrects misspelled words or phrases.
Text level features such as bold, underline, tilt and reprimand
Page-level features such as indents, paragraphs, and justifications
External support: Word is compatible with many other programs, the most common are other members of the Office suite. The default file format is .doc before the Microsoft Word 2007 version; in 2007, .docx became the default file format.
